What are Coastal Buses?

Pembrokeshire Coastal Bus Services are local bus services that travel along the coast, seven days a week during the summer and three days a week during the winter, to access walks, beaches, boat trips, local villages and attractions. There are 5 in all

Why are they running?

They help locals and visitors get to the coast without having to use a car. Whatever your interest, the coastal bus services are perfect for you!

How do I use them?

You can use the coastal buses for both 'out' and 'back' journeys or simply use the bus for your outward journey and walk back to your destination. This enables you to walk the Coast Path in one direction without having to retrace your steps.
Catching a bus in Pembrokeshire is easy. All coastal buses operate on a 'Hail & Ride' basis in rural areas, so all you have to do is signal to the driver to stop. Passengers can be picked up or set down at any point along the bus route - providing it is safe to do so.

Where do I catch the bus?

The buses run to a timetable, which describes where the bus stops are located. In towns you catch the bus at a recognised bus stop, but once you get into the countryside the buses operate on a 'Hail and Ride' basis, which means you don't have to find a bus stop to catch the bus. Simply join the road and flag the bus down as it passes you.

Our local drivers are very knowledgeable about the area and will help you locate walking drop-off and pick-up points, find your destination or recommend one!

When do they run?

Summer: All coastal buses run seven days a week during the summer, between May to September.
Winter: The Poppit Rocket, Strumble Shuttle, Puffin Shuttle & Coastal Cruiser run to a reduced winter timetable from October to April.

Are the buses running this winter?

Yes! Four out of the five coastal buses are running now: Poppit Rocket, Strumble Shuttle, Puffin Shutle and Coastal Crusier. They offer a reduced service during the winter, which reflects demand at this time of year, but they do run!
In addition to these buses there are local bus services that run all year round, with limited Sunday services in the summer. See below link to 'Bus Timetables' for further information

When do the buses run in the summer?

The coastal buses run seven days a week throughout the summer, to the same timetable every day. Yes, even on Sundays and Bank Holidays! The 2008 summer schedule starts on Saturday 3rd May 2008. Timetables will be available in the New Year and are also printed in Coast to Coast.

Where do they run?

Pembrokeshire Coastal bus services run up and down the National Park coastline, ensuring that the entire length of the 186-mile (299km) Pembrokeshire Coast Path National Trail, from St Dogmaels to Amroth, is accessible by public transport.

How much does the bus cost?

It is difficult to give you an exact fare, as the coastal buses are registered local services, with fares structured accordingly. If you would like to know the cost please ring the bus operator directly, contact details are shown on the timetables.
All Wales Bus Pass holders travel free on the coastal buses - simply show your pass to the driver.
WEST WALES ROVER TICKET – If you are travelling on lots of buses in one day the West Wales Rover Ticket offers great value. Tickets are valid for all day travel (one day only) at the cost of £6.20 for adults and £4.20 for children. A child accompanying an adult holding a Rover ticket can travel for £3.15. Simply ask the bus driver for a West Wales Rover Ticket on the first bus you use in the day.

How do I walk the Coast Path without a car?

Easy! Catch a train, coach or ferry into Pembrokeshire and then use the buses to get around. The beauty of using the coastal buses is that you can walk the Coast Path in one direction without having to worry about collecting a car at the end of the day. By using the buses to travel up and down the coast it also means you can stay in your accommodation for more nights. See the 'Coast Path' section for itinerary ideas.

Can I bring my dog on the bus?

Yes, your dog is welcome on the bus (at the driver's discretion) providing they are clean, kept on a lead and sit on the floor out of the way of other passengers. All we ask is that you be a responsible owner and clean up after your little friend - leave only paw prints behind!

Can I bring my bike on the bus?

Unfortunately we only have one bus that carries bikes, but Greenways is working on improving this for the future! The Coastal Cruiser bus, which runs out of Pembroke, carries: 2x bikes, surf-boards and 1x wheelchair. You can now book your bike on the bus in advance of travel by ringing Silcox on: 01646 683143 (Mon-Fri, during office hours).
Don't forget you can also carry bikes on trains: 2x bikes on the Arriva Trains Wales and 6x bikes on the First Great Western Trains.
